What a receptionist really costs
The wage is only part of it. When you hire, you also pay employer contributions such as CPP and EI, vacation pay, any benefits, and the time and money to recruit and train. And you still need cover for breaks, lunches, sick days and vacations, when the phone goes unanswered again.
A worked example (replace these assumptions with your own numbers): a full-time receptionist at $22 an hour for 37.5 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, is about $42,900 in wages. Employer contributions, vacation pay and benefits add more on top, often several thousand dollars. That covers about 37.5 hours of the 168 hours in a week.
For comparison, Ontario's general minimum wage is $17.95 an hour from October 1, 2026 (Ontario government). Experienced front-desk staff usually earn more than minimum wage.
